Easy Tote Bags (Sewing Project For Beginners)

Image
Hi there, I made two tote bags using cute cat-printed home decor fabrics. These tote bags are easy and fast to make, a perfect sewing project for beginner sewists. The final size is approximately 34 cm long x 34 cm wide and 9 cm deep. The size is enough to carry books or shopping stuff. The process started with cutting the fabric,  - The tote bag's body: 42 cm long x 38 cm wide (on fold). - Handle: 62 cm long x 8 cm wide (2x). - Bias tape band 4 cm wide. Fold the fabric right sides together and sew both sides. And then, clip and sew the bias tape band to secure the fabric (to avoid fraying). Cut the corners, 3 cm x 3cm square, after the seam allowance. Sew the corner and secure it with bias tape band ( both sides). Here is the look after I sew the corners. I work on the handles by folding them in half and then clip the seam allowance 1 cm inside. Fold the seam allowance 1 cm inside and fold the fabr...

Ottobre Josephine Dress

Hello fellow sewists. I sewed this dress a week ago and I am happy that summer has arrived, so I can wear it right away.
For the pattern, I used Ottobre Design 02/2018 Josephine dress size 38 and for the fabric, I used lightweight cotton in printed green, I bought it last year during our trip to Singapore. Glad I found this fabric, cotton is perfect to wear in hot summer weather and the print is perfect for casual wear.
The sewing notion (invisible zipper, threads, and fusible interfacing) were from stash, so I don't need to go out to buy new ones.

I wore this dress yesterday to test, I didn't go anywhere because of the pandemic, just staying at home, doing housework, sewing and helping my son with his homework.
I was surprised, this dress was comfortable to wear and I could move freely doing the housework 😄

About the pattern, it's lovely and easy to work with. It came in six pieces of patterns (the skirt is one piece with two different lines of center back).
I used size 38 with adjustment, I added 1 cm on both sides of the bodice and skirt pieces. Also, shorten the skirt length a few centimeters.
And about the instruction, I didn't follow them because my magazine is in Spanish. I just follow my self-taught.
The sewing progress was enjoyable, I fused the lightweight fusible interfacing to the neck facings first, overlock the raw edges and sew it according to the usual manner.
Also, I fused the interfacing along the center back before I sew the invisible zipper, I love this method. It makes the zipper stand nicely and neatly.
The flutter sleeves are lovely and airy, perfect for summer. I used rolled hem to finish the sleeves.

My final thought, I love this dress. The design is simple, feminine and I can wear it on any occasion, from dressing up to casual look 👍
For sure I'll be sewing this pattern again in different color and also, I'm thinking to hack it into a top. I have some leftover and remnant fabrics that are perfect for summer tops.

This dress is my entry to #magamsewalong April, a sewing challenge in Instagram hosted by Sue, Helene, and Suzy with theme "Antidote April", I chose a fabric souvenir from stash and sew a special dress that I can wear more times in my daily life.

Well, that's it for today. I'm off to plan and choose the right pattern and fabric for Multicultural May

Happy sewing!
